The group was attending a party to celebrate the end of recording their Wings album Venus and Mars in 1975. The party, held on March 24, 1975, aboard the permanently docked RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, was a star-studded affair with around 200 guests. The event was notable as the first time Paul McCartney and George Harrison had been seen in public since the Beatles' breakup.
