George Harrison annotated Telex 1979
An original telex sent to George Harrison at Friar Park from Granada Television seeking permission to use old performance footage of the Beatles for a television special.
The Telex Reads:
“you may or may not remember scene at 6.30 studio 4 Manchester and Mike Scott who sat in the linkman’s chair stop you will certainly be surprised to know that he is now programme controller of Granada TV stop probably as surprised as he is stop we have a network compilation show going out over Christmas call the solid gold top twenty stop its basically an archive show of the 20 best sellers in the uk over the last 20 years and as you know you feature heavily in it stop we have archive footage of two numbers sung by you in the early days and want to use between 30 and 40 seconds of each. they are i want to hold your hand and we can work it out stop the clearance problems are proving formidable and this is a last resort effort stop is it possible for you to relieve us from second best alternatives and give us the go ahead to use the real thing stop have sent same cable to each of you and a one word yes reply will be very welcome warm regards with way mike.”
George Harrison has handwritten his reply at the bottom of the page in blue fountain ink which reads:
“Use of 2 songs O.K. by me G.H.
But Limited to the Christmas Showing ONLY. Any repeats / or resale / syndications to be negotiated with Apple Corps LTD. Best wishes G.H."
