The autograph was obtained on 7th of February 1964 by a Pan Am ground steward at Heathrow Airport, before the band embarked on their journey to America for their first US tour and debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Beatles autographs dating from the band’s first visit to America are considered among the scarcest and most sought-after in the field of music memorabilia. The autographs come with a note from the family of the original owner, which reads: The Beatles’ autographs were obtained at London’s Heathrow Airport by Airport Supervisor\/Ground Steward Harry Lloyd on the band’s first flight to America, Pan Am Flight 101, on the Jet Clipper Defiance , landing at New York’s JFK Airport. Following their first No. 1 hit, “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which was highly successful in both the UK and Europe, the band was met with massive US media attention and more than 5,000 screaming American fans. The Flight: The band took off on 7 February 1964 from London’s Heathrow Airport on their flight to New York, accompanied by manager Brian Epstein and his assistant Neil Aspinall, as well as many British journalists and photographers. The Arrival: Upon arrival at 1:20 p.m., the scene was described as utterly “chaotic” and “like a royal tour.” The crowd was immense, far exceeding the band’s expectations. Immediate Aftermath: The group quickly proceeded to their first press conference on American soil, where they appeared confident, witty, and fun. They performed live on The Ed Sullivan Show two days later, kickstarting Beatlemania in the USA. Cultural Impact: Their arrival marked the start of the “British Invasion,” a defining moment in 1960s pop culture that gave the Beatles worldwide fame. About Harry Lloyd: Harry Lloyd was an airport employee throughout the 1960s and 1970s and lived locally with his wife and only daughter on a new council estate in Bedfont, two miles from the airport. He was of Irish descent on his mother’s side and was nicknamed “Mickey” or “Mick.” Harry Lloyd died on 12 November 1999, and his daughter inherited the autographs. She does not have his birth certificate and cannot recall his year of birth, but believes he was approximately 30 years old when the autographs were obtained. Harry Lloyd worked for Pan Am, the dominant international airline of the period, which had a major presence at London Heathrow in the early jet era on the north side of the airport estate at Terminal 3. He wore a smart uniform of black trousers, white shirt, black tie, and black shoes, along with his mandatory name badge and lanyard for authorisation to board the plane. He held a manual airside role but was neither a baggage handler nor a booking agent. His daughter was very young at the time and is unsure of his exact job titles, except that he was always permitted to board aircraft and obtained several autographs from famous passengers once they were seated. She believes he may have started in more junior roles, such as ramp agent\/ramp serviceman, load control runner\/loadmaster assistant, or operations runner—bringing document pouches to pilots or delivering duty-free or VIP items to the plane. He later rose to the title of “Airport Supervisor,” which is the occupation listed on his death certificate. It is believed that these autographs were among the last given on British soil before the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon, giving them a special place in the memorabilia of this iconic band.
