Love John + May.” John has also added one of his signature face doodles. This postcard was written during John’s 18-month period from late 1973 to early 1975, during which he was separated from his wife, Yoko Ono—now commonly known as “The Lost Weekend.” During this time, Lennon was in a relationship with their personal assistant, May Pang, and lived primarily in Los Angeles and New York City. At the suggestion of Yoko Ono, who felt their marriage was under strain, May Pang became Lennon’s companion. Pang is often credited as a grounding influence, helping Lennon reconnect with his first son, Julian, and with his former bandmate, Paul McCartney. Beatles autographs dating from the band’s first visit to America are considered among the scarcest and most sought-after in the field of music memorabilia. The autographs come with a note from the family of the original owner, which reads: The Beatles’ autographs were obtained at London’s Heathrow Airport by Airport Supervisor\/Ground Steward Harry Lloyd on the band’s first flight to America, Pan Am Flight 101, on the Jet Clipper Defiance, landing at New York’s JFK Airport. Following their first No. 1 hit, “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which was highly successful in both the UK and Europe, the band was met with massive US media attention and more than 5,000 screaming American fans. The Flight: The band took off on 7 February 1964 from London’s Heathrow Airport on their flight to New York, accompanied by manager Brian Epstein and his assistant Neil Aspinall, as well as many British journalists and photographers. The Arrival: Upon arrival at 1:20 p.m., the scene was described as utterly “chaotic” and “like a royal tour.” The crowd was immense, far exceeding the band’s expectations. Immediate Aftermath: The group quickly proceeded to their first press conference on American soil, where they appeared confident, witty, and fun. They performed live on The Ed Sullivan Show two days later, kickstarting Beatlemania in the USA. Cultural Impact: Their arrival marked the start of the “British Invasion,” a defining moment in 1960s pop culture that gave the Beatles worldwide fame. About Harry Lloyd: Harry Lloyd was an airport employee throughout the 1960s and 1970s and lived locally with his wife and only daughter on a new council estate in Bedfont, two miles from the airport. He was of Irish descent on his mother’s side and was nicknamed “Mickey” or “Mick.” Harry Lloyd died on 12 November 1999, and his daughter inherited the autographs. She does not have his birth certificate and cannot recall his year of birth, but believes he was approximately 30 years old when the autographs were obtained. Harry Lloyd worked for Pan Am, the dominant international airline of the period, which had a major presence at London Heathrow in the early jet era on the north side of the airport estate at Terminal 3. He wore a smart uniform of black trousers, white shirt, black tie, and black shoes, along with his mandatory name badge and lanyard for authorisation to board the plane. He held a manual airside role but was neither a baggage handler nor a booking agent. His daughter was very young at the time and is unsure of his exact job titles, except that he was always permitted to board aircraft and obtained several autographs from famous passengers once they were seated. She believes he may have started in more junior roles, such as ramp agent\/ramp serviceman, load control runner\/loadmaster assistant, or operations runner—bringing document pouches to pilots or delivering duty-free or VIP items to the plane. He later rose to the title of “Airport Supervisor,” which is the occupation listed on his death certificate. It is believed that these autographs were among the last given on British soil before the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon, giving them a special place in the memorabilia of this iconic band. The postcard reads, “Dear Dennis Wow!” and is signed “John + Yoko, Julian + Kyoko,” with Julian and Kyoko drawing a red ballpoint love heart. The postcard is dated the 23rd of June 1969. Although intended for Derek Taylor, John humorously addressed the postcard to “Dennis Taylor.” The postcard originates from Derek Taylor’s personal collection. In June 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, accompanied by their children Julian and Kyoko, visited Wales prior to a trip to Scotland. They stayed at the Corbett Arms Hotel in the seaside town of Tywyn. The postcard was issued to mark the forthcoming Investiture of the Prince of Wales on 1 July 1969. John also sent the same postcard to Ringo Starr; it is illustrated in Postcards from the Boys, Genesis Publications, 2004. Derek Taylor was a journalist, author, and record producer, best known as the press officer for The Beatles. In early 1964, while working for the Daily Express and ghost-writing a column for George Harrison, Taylor was hired by Brian Epstein as The Beatles’ publicist. He accompanied the group on their first U.S. tour later that summer. In 1965, Taylor moved to the United States and established his own public relations company, working with artists such as The Beach Boys and The Byrds. In early 1968, he returned to England to serve as press officer for the newly formed Apple Corps. He left the company in late 1970 following The Beatles’ breakup and subsequently joined WEA. After several years, he returned to the U.S., becoming a vice president at Warner Bros. Records. Taylor’s career came full circle in the early 1990s when he rejoined Apple, working on projects including The Beatles Anthology.
