The autographs were obtained on 13 October 1963, during the band’s performance on Val Parnell’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium. On the night, The Beatles appeared briefly at the start of the show before compère Bruce Forsyth told the audience, “If you want to see them again, they’ll be back in 42 minutes.” And indeed, they were. The Beatles headlined the show, closing the hour-long programme. They opened with From Me to You, followed by I’ll Get You, introduced by Paul McCartney. Their latest hit, She Loves You, came next announced collectively by Lennon, McCartney, and George Harrison. The finale was Twist and Shout. McCartney attempted to introduce it but was drowned out by the screams of the audience. Lennon famously told the crowd to “shut up,” a moment that drew applause from the older attendees. McCartney then encouraged everyone to clap and stamp their feet as they launched into the closing number. Although The Beatles’ popularity had been building throughout 1963, their appearance at the London Palladium on this night is widely seen as a turning point. The overwhelming fan reaction led the mainstream press to coin the term Beatlemania the following day. The autographs come with a letter of provenance from the original owner, which reads: “I had a cousin, Lawrence Crighton, who came over from New Zealand in the early 1960s. He was a qualified electrician but wanted to try his hand at theatre work—presumably there weren’t many theatres in NZ at the time, though I believe he gained some experience through amateur productions. He was looked after initially by my dad's elder sister, my aunt Mercia, who lived in West Yorkshire at the time. She helped him get a job at a local theatre. However, Lawrence wanted to see the bright lights and eventually moved to London, where he joined the large Aussie and Kiwi community in Earl’s Court. Before he left for London, he visited our family in Liverpool with my aunt, and he learned that I was a big Beatles fan. He later secured a job as a lighting electrician at the London Palladium. When The Beatles appeared on Sunday Night at the London Palladium, he managed to get their autographs for me. I believe he sent them to me shortly after the show, and I’ve kept them ever since. Lawrence stayed in the UK for a while, travelled around Europe, and eventually returned to New Zealand.” The autographs measure 22.8 x 17.8 cm The condition is Excellent with a light stain on the reverse

An original Cavern Club membership card from the 1962 season, signed on the inner pages by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best in blue ballpoint pen John Lennon has added the inscription “Love To Norma From” before his signature. We had been to a Beatles concert at I think it was called the Odeon in those days Leeds City Centre. It was circa mid to early 60s when the Beatles had just brought out first recordings which were huge hits. It didn't matter that they sang at the concert because the audience were on their feet going wild and screaming the name of their favourite band member!! George has signed in red ballpoint, and the others have signed in blue ballpoint All four member have added the inscription “xxx” after there names with only Paul adding the inscription “Love” before his name The autographs date to 1963 The autographs come with a note from the original owner which reads: “In 1958, my Mother started working at London Airport (now Heathrow). She joined Starways, a small Liverpool based airline operating a daily DC3 aircraft to London. One day, she was asked to meet and assist four passengers to transfer to a flight to Germany. It turned out to be the Beatles making their first trip to Hamburg and their transfer proved to be a little more complicated than expected when it was realised that their passports had inadvertently been left in Liverpool. Air travel was simpler in those days and my Mother was able to get authority for them to fly on to Germany without passports on the promise that she would get the passports sent on the next flight which she did. This could never happen today and the Beatles never forgot her help. On more than one occasion, they gave us complimentary tickets for their London shows. We were always given seats in the front row which meant we could just about hear what they were singing. Further back, the screams tended to drown out the music. After the concert, we would be collected and taken to see them all in their dressing room to chat and to get my autograph book signed. I remember that for one concert, we were asked to collect our tickets at the door. We arrived before the tickets were ready for us so we were asked to come back a little later. We decided to walk to a nearby cafe. To our surprise, we found ourselves being followed by dozens of girls. It turned out that they thought we'd been given a 'secret' route into the theatre and they were very disappointed when we went into the cafe. Over the years, Mother met and assisted many members of their families. In the school holidays, we would often fly up to Liverpool to meet up with her Starways friends and sometimes we would also see Paul McCartney's dad, Jim. The first time I met him, he cooked us lunch at the family home in Forthlin Road which was a great thrill. In July 1965, it was the world premier of the film HELP. I went to London Airport to meet the families when they flew down for the celebrations. There were several chauffeured limousines to collect them and Jim and his wife Angie asked if I would like to ride into London with them. It was great fun because they were all so excited about the premier and it was the poshest car I had ever been in. I came home on the tube quite happily. After the premier, I again went to the airport to see them and to hear about the evening. As they went to board their flight, John's Aunt Mimi gave me her signed programme. I was so thrilled and it's been one of several items of memorabilia that I have treasured over the years. For my 16th birthday, my Mother got the boys to sign a birthday card to me - it was my best present that year. Starways was eventually taken over by British Eagle and I have two pictures of my Mother with the Beatles, taken on a British Eagle aircraft. For me, these pictures seem to encompass most of my Beatles memories and will always remind me just how lucky I have been.
